Strengthening active assailant prevention and response

Challenge
Operating as a leading southeastern university, the institution engaged AT-RISK to strengthen prevention and response to active assailant incidents. The university required a comprehensive evaluation of its existing security and crisis response framework to identify gaps across emergency management plans, protocols, training materials, and interagency coordination efforts.

Solution
AT-RISK conducted a full security review, including analysis of emergency management and crisis response plans, security protocols, training materials, and interagency communications. The team completed more than 50 stakeholder interviews with internal and external partners and assessed 60 campus facilities for technology, security hardware, and procedural improvements. Additional work included reviewing a proposal to establish a Behavioral Threat Concerns Team, evaluating a planned physical security expansion for a specific facility, and assessing enhancements to emergency notification templates.

Success
This engagement provided the university with a comprehensive, prioritized roadmap to enhance campus safety, improve coordination among stakeholders, and strengthen prevention and response capabilities.
